5 Signs You Need an AC Replacement
An air conditioner unit is one of those purchases you might make and then forget about. Every summer, it comes out; by fall, it returns to storage. Most of us don't have to worry about repairs or maintenance, aside from a routine filter clean every season. However, that doesn't mean you have to get caught off guard when your air conditioner does break—especially if it's in the middle of summer.
Be on the lookout for these 5 signs it's time for an AC replacement!
When It's Not Worth A Repair
If something goes wrong with your AC unit, you may consider a repair first. However, there are a few circumstances when it’s better to replace it than a repair, such as:
- If the AC unit is more than eight years old
- If it will cost more to repair it than replace it
- If you'd have to repair the ducts that deliver the cold air and the insulation in your house as well
Depending on your budget, it may be worth it to have a contractor take a look at your system before making any decisions.
A Lack of Cool Air or Limited Airflow
An immediate sign there is something wrong is a lack of cool air, warm or humid air blowing out, or limited airflow. Your air conditioner shouldn’t take a few minutes to start sending out cold air, either. Restricted airflow could signify a pipe or duct clog or a broken motor.
Moisture or Leaks
Some moisture is expected, and your AC unit should be able to handle it without alarm. However, when you begin to notice the moisture, or it turns into a leak, it most likely means there is an issue with the refrigerant. Not only will it cause your system to under-perform, but it can also present a health risk for you and your family. A humid, moist area is the perfect environment for mold to grow.
Strange Noises or Foul Smells
Most air conditioners are quiet, and any unusual noises should alert you there is a problem. Sounds such as grinding, squeaking, or chattering are a common sign of aging. Unfortunately, there is no repair for this, and you'll need to upgrade your system.
Similarly, foul smells are also an immediate cause for concern. Air conditioners in good condition disperse a clean, neutral-smelling scent. Smokey or burning odors are a warning sign that will require immediate attention and replacement.
A Higher Energy Bill
While you may expect a slight increase in your energy bill during the summer, a considerable spike is a sign your AC system is working too hard to cool off your space. What’s worse is if it is using a lot of energy and not performing well or producing cold enough air. By opting to replace your system, you can save on your energy bill year after year, especially if you choose an Energy Star certified air conditioner.
