    The Appliance Expert's Advice on Cleaning Stainless Steel

    Stainless steel is perhaps best known for its ability to resist rust and corrosion, making it a popular choice in kitchens. However, if you own stainless steel appliances, then you probably know that they are hardly ever free of stains. The surfaces of dishwashers, refrigerators, and ovens tend to attract fingerprints and water stains. This can be frustrating, but the good news is that cleaning stainless steel appliances is easy.

    As appliance experts, we wanted to share nine simple ways you can clean your stainless steel appliances for a flawless finish.

    1. Dish Soap and Baby Oil

    Put about ½ teaspoon of dish soap on a rag and moisten it with a modest amount of water (just enough to dampen). Then, wipe along the grain of your appliance. For extra stubborn stains, you might have to go over the area a few times. When you finish cleaning, be sure to dry the appliance with a clean towel.

    To polish the appliance, dab a few tiny drops of baby oil onto a clean, dry rag. Again, rub along the grain of your steel, in both directions, and you’ll see a nice shine emerge.

    2. White Vinegar and Olive Oil

    Pour a bottle of distilled white vinegar into a clean spray bottle. Spray the surface you want to clean and let it sit for 30 to 60 seconds. Then, wipe away the vinegar in the direction of the grain with a microfiber cloth. Repeat as necessary. When the appliance is completely clean, apply a few drops of olive oil to a clean, dry cloth and polish in the direction of the grain.  

    3. Club Soda

    Pour a bottle of club soda into a clean spray bottle. Spray the club soda directly onto your appliances. Wipe clean in the direction of the grain with a soft, microfiber cloth. This will clean the fingerprints, stains, and leave behind a nice shine in one step.

    4. WD-40

    This is an odd, but super simple method for cleaning stainless steel. Get a bottle of WD-40 and spray a light coat directly onto your appliance, then wipe away for instant clean and shine. As a bonus, WD-40 also provides a layer of protection to help prevent pesky fingerprints from appearing later on.

    5. Lemon Oil Furniture Polish

    This is another simple, but effective way to clean stainless steel. Unlike other methods described, first pour or spray the polish directly onto a clean cloth, and then rub it into the appliance in the direction of the grain. Then, wipe clean with a different microfiber towel.

    6. Glass Cleaner

    Fingerprints can be easily removed with any common glass cleaner, such as Windex. Spray the cleaner on a microfiber cloth and apply evenly in a circular motion to remove the fingerprints. This won’t bring out a shine, but it’s a good way to keep stainless steel clean between polishings.

    7. Flour

    This method is ideal for stainless steel sinks. First, make sure your sink is clean from any surface dirt and food particles. Then, coat the sink in plain white flour. Finally, use a soft cloth to buff the sink in a circular motion. It will start to shine like new almost immediately.

    8. Commercial Stainless Steel Cleaners

    If your appliance has extensive stains, scratches, scratching, or needs a thorough polishing, then you may want to consider a commercial stainless steel cleaner. This is the most expensive option, but these products are effective at producing dramatic and long-lasting results. Be sure to read the manufacturer’s instructions before using any commercial product.

    9. Water and a Cloth

    You’d be surprised how much routine cleaning you can accomplish with just warm water and a lint-free cloth. By following the direction of the grain, the majority of the smudges will vanish without the need for special supplies or chemicals. Just be sure to dry the appliance with a towel or cloth to prevent water stains.

    Tips for Dad: 8 Grilling Ideas You Never Considered

    Father’s Day and backyard barbecues go hand in hand. Whether you’re a dad who loves to man the grill, or you’ll be handling the grill while dad chills in the hammock, we’ve got some great grilling ideas for you. So, forget the burgers and hot dogs. This year, elevate your grilling game with eight of the best grill recipes we bet you’ve never tried.

    1. Grilled Clams with Paprika Butter

    When you toss hot clams right off the grill with some flavored butter, it's an irresistible combination.

    Ingredients

    • 4 pounds grilled clams
    • ½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, room temperature
    • 1¼ teaspoon hot smoked paprika
    • 1 teaspoon celery seeds
    • ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper
    • Salt and pepper

    Directions

    1. Set grill to medium-high heat and place clams directly on grill grate. Let them sit undisturbed until they pop open, then transfer to a bowl.
    2. Mix butter, paprika, celery seeds, and cayenne in a small bowl until well combined; season with salt and black pepper to taste.
    3. Add butter to bowl with grilled clams and toss to coat. Serve immediately.

    2. Grilled Lamb Meatballs Kebobs

    These lamb meatballs may look fancy, but they only take 6 to 8 minutes to cook on the grill!

    Ingredients

    • 3 slices white sandwich bread, torn into large pieces
    • ¼ cup whole milk
    • 1 small onion, quartered
    • 2 cloves garlic
    • 1 large egg white
    • 2 teaspoons coarse salt
    • 1 teaspoon freshly ground pepper
    • 1 pound ground lamb
    • ½ pound ground pork

    Directions

    1. Working in batches, pulse bread into coarse crumbs in a food processor. Transfer to a bowl, drizzle with milk, and let stand 10 minutes.
    2. Meanwhile, puree onion and garlic in processor until smooth. Add egg white, salt, and pepper; pulse to combine.
    3. Stir onion mixture into breadcrumbs. Add lamb and pork and gently mix until just combined.
    4. With dampened hands, form mixture into 1-inch-diameter balls. Place on a parchment-lined baking sheet, cover, and refrigerate until ready to use, up to 1 day.
    5. Set grill to medium-high heat and thread meatballs onto kebob skewers (about 2 or 3 meatballs per skewer).
    6. Grill meatballs, turning a few times, until just cooked through, about 6 to 8 minutes.

    3. Grilled Bacon

    Combine dad's 2 favorite things-grilling and bacon-for pure dad-food perfection.

    Ingredients

    • 1 pound thick cut bacon (Hint: get it from your local butcher)
    • 1 cup chopped parsley
    • 1 tablespoon chopped garlic
    • 1 tablespoon chopped shallots
    • 1 cup olive oil
    • Sherry vinegar (optional)
    • Pinch of salt

    Directions

    1. Whisk together all ingredients, except bacon and vinegar, and set aside.
    2. Grill all bacon together on medium heat. Grill each side for 5 to 7 minutes until desired crispness.
    3. Transfer bacon to a plate and drizzle dressing over it.
    4. Finish with a drizzle of sherry vinegar, if desired.

    4. Grilled Cesar Salad

    Take this basic salad to the next level.

    Ingredients

    • 2 heads of romaine lettuce, root end removed
    • Olive oil, as needed
    • Kosher salt to taste
    • Pepper to taste
    • 1 egg yolk
    • 2 anchovy fillets
    • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
    • Grated Parmesan cheese

     

    Directions

    1. Rinse romaine and let dry. Cut into thick chunks; then toss the lettuce pieces in olive oil, salt, and pepper, to taste.
    2. Brush a grill pan with additional olive oil and heat a grill pan over medium-high heat.
    3. Grill romaine pieces on the grill pan until char marks start to form and the lettuce begins to soften, turning occasionally, about 3-4 minutes.
    4. To make the dressing, whisk egg yolk, mustard, salt, pepper, and lemon together in a mixing bowl. Slowly stream in oil while whisking continuously, until dressing comes together.
    5. Place the grilled greens on a plate, drizzle with dressing, and top with Parmesan cheese.

    5. Grilled Bruschetta Chicken

    This dish looks really fancy, but it's easy to make.

    Ingredients

    • 4 tablespoons olive oil
    • Juice of 1 lemon
    • 1 teaspoon salt
    • Pinch of black pepper
    • 1 teaspoon of Italian seasoning
    • 4 boneless chicken breasts, pounded for even thickness
    • 3 Roma tomatoes, diced
    • 2 cloves garlic, minced
    • 1 tablespoon of freshly chopped basil
    • 4 slices of mozzarella cheese
    • Grated Parmesan cheese

     

    Directions

    1. In a small bowl, combine oil, half the lemon juice, 1 teaspoon salt, pepper, and Italian seasoning. Whisk to combine. Pour mixture into a large re-sealable bag with the chicken, and chill in the refrigerator for 30 minutes.
    2. Transfer chicken to a preheated grill and discard excess marinade. Grill chicken over medium-high heat until cooked through. About 5 to 7 minutes per side.
    3. Meanwhile, combine tomatoes, garlic, chopped basil, and remaining lemon juice, and season with salt and pepper. While chicken is still on grill, top each breast with 1 slice mozzarella and cover grill until cheese is melted, 2 to 3 minutes.
    4. Top chicken with tomato mixture.
    5. Sprinkle with freshly grated Parmesan and serve.

    6. Grilled Shrimp Foil Packets

    These quick and easy foil packets take their inspiration from the beloved shrimp boil.

    Ingredients

    • 2 pounds large shrimp
    • 2 smoked andouille sausages, thinly sliced
    • 2 cloves garlic, minced
    • 2 ears corn, each cut into 4 pieces
    • 1 pound of red bliss potatoes chopped into 1" pieces
    • 2 tablespoons of olive oil
    • 1 tablespoon old bay seasoning
    • 4 tablespoons butter
    • Salt and pepper
    • 1 lemon, sliced into thin wedges
    • 2 tablespoons fresh parley, chopped

    Directions

    1. Preheat grill over high heat.
    2. Cut 4 sheets of foil about 12 inches long. Divide shrimp, garlic, sausage, corn, and potatoes evenly over the foil sheets. Drizzle with olive oil.
    3. Add the Old Bay seasoning and season to taste with salt and pepper. Toss gently to combine.
    4. Top each mixture with parsley, lemon and a tablespoon of butter each.
    5. Fold the foil packets crosswise over the shrimp boil mixture to completely cover the food. Roll the top and bottom edges to seal them closed.
    6. Place foil packets on the grill and cook until just cooked through, about 10-15 minutes.
    7. Serve immediately.

    7. Grilled Peaches with Cinnamon-Sugar Butter

    This recipe just takes a few minutes to make and tastes awesome with a big scoop of ice cream on the side.

    Ingredients

    • 2 ripe peaches, halved and pitted
    • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, room temperature
    • 2 teaspoons sugar
    • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
    • Olive oil or canola oil

    Directions

    1. Slice peaches in half lengthwise and remove pits; set aside.
    2. In a small bowl, mix butter, cinnamon, and sugar until well combined.
    3. Heat your grill to medium-high.
    4. Brush peaches with oil and grill cut-side-down until slightly softened and charred, a little over 1 minute. Flip to rounded side and grill an additional minute.
    5. Serve grilled peaches on individual plates. Top each with cinnamon-sugar butter, fresh basil or mint, and a scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.

    8. Grilled Vanilla French Toast

    Want to really surprise dad this year? Make him breakfast on the grill with this easy recipe.

    Ingredients

    • 6 eggs
    • ¼ sugar
    • Pinch of salt
    • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
    • 2 cups whole milk
    • Vegetable oil
    • 12 slices of white sandwich bread, or challah, lightly toasted
    • Butter, jam, and maple syrup for serving

    Directions

    1. In a shallow baking dish, whisk the eggs with the sugar, salt and vanilla extract. Whisk in the milk.
    2. Working in batches, add the slices of bread to the egg mixture and turn to coat; let stand until well soaked, about 1 to 2 minutes.
    3. Lightly oil the grill grates, then grill the soaked bread over moderately high heat until dark brown grill marks form on the bottom, about 2 minutes. Flip and grill for about 2 minutes longer, until the French toast is cooked through.
    4. Transfer to plates and serve with butter and maple syrup or jam.
